Day 1: Kigali Pick-Up & Transfer to Akagera National Park

Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or residence in Kigali. After breakfast and check-out, you will drive east toward Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s premier wildlife destination.

As you leave the city behind, enjoy sweeping views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, earning it the name “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the region and begin an en-route game drive, offering your first sightings of Akagera’s wildlife. Watch for elephants, giraffes, antelopes, and, with luck, lions moving across the open plains.

You will arrive at the park in time for lunch and check in at Mantis Akagera Game Lodge, a luxury lodge located inside the park with panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. After check-in, relax and enjoy the lodge’s facilities, whether by the pool, on the terrace, or in the comfort of your room.

In the evening, head out for an exciting night game drive. This rare experience allows you to observe nocturnal species such as bushbabies, nightjars, and possibly leopards as the park comes alive after dark. After the drive, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 2: Akagera Game Drives & Lake Ihema Boat Cruise

Start your day with an early breakfast at the lodge before collecting packed lunch boxes for a full day of exploration. The morning begins with a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, the largest lake in Akagera National Park.

As you cruise across the calm waters, spot large pods of hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and a wide variety of birdlife. Bird lovers will enjoy sightings of African fish eagles, herons, cormorants, and, on rare occasions, the shoebill stork.

After the cruise, continue with an extensive game drive through the southern sections of the park, including the scenic giraffe area. Drive along lakeside roads and open savannahs as you search for elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and different antelope species. Akagera’s diverse landscapes offer constant photo opportunities.

Around midday, stop at a designated picnic site to enjoy your packed lunch in a peaceful natural setting. After lunch, continue exploring other areas of the park in search of additional wildlife.

In the late afternoon, return to Mantis Akagera Game Lodge. Spend the evening relaxing, enjoying sunset views, or unwinding with a drink before dinner at the lodge.
