4 Days Rwenzori Hiking Safari Tour. Wild Planet Safaris proudly offers this immersive 4 Days Rwenzori Hiking Safari Tour through one of Uganda’s most breathtaking and least explored mountain landscapes. This section of the Rwenzori Mountains remained largely untouched for years, yet guidebooks consistently describe it as the most scenic and rewarding part of the range. Today, Wild Planet Safaris opens this hidden gem to adventurous travelers seeking raw beauty, dramatic terrain, and unforgettable trekking experiences.
On this journey, you actively explore the spectacular Nyamwamba Valley, encounter unique Afro-alpine vegetation, and witness striking views stretching across valleys, ridges, and distant lakes. Every step introduces you to diverse ecosystems, from dense montane forests to bamboo zones and moss-covered high-altitude ridges.
Wild Planet Safaris includes full camping accommodation and meals throughout the trek. The company provides essential climbing gear such as ropes, harnesses, and crampons when necessary. You can also hire boots, sleeping bags, gloves, raincoats, and woolen hats. Porters carry stretchers and mattresses, but you must bring warm clothing and a reliable sleeping bag for your comfort.
Important Note: Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) entrance fees remain independent of Wild Planet Safaris and may change without prior notice.
Your adventure with Wild Planet Safaris begins at Trekkers Hostel in Kyanjiki, located about 12 kilometers from Kasese past Kilembe. The newly tarmacked road ensures smooth access to the base camp, except for the final stretch.
You start your trek ideally at 8:30 AM, though you can depart as late as 10:00 AM. The trail first leads you on a 2.2 km walk to the UWA ranger post at 1,727 meters. Here, rangers actively brief you on park regulations, safety guidelines, and the day’s itinerary.
From the base camp at 1,450 meters, you ascend steadily to Samalira Camp at 3,147 meters, covering 8.6 km in approximately 5 to 7 hours. You begin with a gradual climb through dense montane forest filled with towering trees, thick undergrowth, and vibrant wildlife. As you hike, you may spot various bird species and primates thriving in this untouched ecosystem.
At around 2,570 meters, you stop for lunch. During this break, you often observe black-and-white colobus monkeys or blue monkeys leaping through the canopy in lively groups. After lunch, you enter the bamboo zone, where dense vegetation shelters numerous birds and insects.
As you continue climbing, the bamboo gradually thins, giving way to giant heather trees draped in moss. Upon reaching Samalira Camp, you enjoy sweeping views of Kasese town, Lake George, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. The camp’s name means “lookout,” and it truly delivers panoramic scenery. You can also access mobile network coverage at this point.
After breakfast, Wild Planet Safaris guides you to begin trekking at 8:15 AM. You cross a small stream shortly after leaving camp, then tackle a steep ascent along a narrow ridge covered in thick moss. The deep green moss blankets rocks and ground surfaces, creating a surreal and delicate environment. You help preserve this ecosystem by staying on designated trails.
As you climb, you enjoy breathtaking views across multiple ridges and valleys. You can spot Kilembe village far below and see Lake George shimmering in the distance. The trail then leads you through Chavumba (meaning “heaven”) at 3,316 meters, where the terrain becomes less steep but muddier.
You proceed through a dense forest of moss-covered trees, eventually reaching the ridge at 3,515 meters. From here, you descend gradually for about one kilometer before making a steep drop into Nyamwamba Valley. You stop for lunch at Polys Rock Shelter at 3,249 meters.
After lunch, you trek 2.6 km along the Nyamwamba River, passing through ancient heather trees adorned with “Old Man’s Beard” moss. As you approach the valley head, you navigate a rocky section filled with massive boulders formed by ancient glaciers. These glaciers carved the valleys millions of years ago, leaving behind rocky deposits and boggy terrain.
Crossing these peat-rich bogs challenges your footing, but the experience remains uniquely rewarding. You then ascend to Kiharo Camp at 3,588 meters, located beneath towering granite cliffs rising 20 to 40 meters high. The dramatic landscape surrounds you with rugged peaks and a fast-flowing river nearby.
At camp, Wild Planet Safaris provides spacious tents with annex areas where you can relax and enjoy the stunning alpine environment. Adventurous hikers may also explore nearby cliffs for additional views.
On Day 3, you retrace your steps past Polys Rock Shelter and climb back to the main ridge at 3,515 meters. From there, you follow the southern trail connecting to the route from Mutinda toward Kalalama Camp.
You descend to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 meters, completing a 7.6 km trek over 5 to 6 hours. Along the way, you experience changing landscapes and fresh perspectives of the surrounding valleys.
At Kalalama Camp, Wild Planet Safaris prepares your evening meal while you relax and take in expansive views of Kasese town and Lake George from a different angle. Towering cliffs of Rwatamaguta and Karasimbi dominate the southern skyline, showcasing the rugged diversity of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Your final day with Wild Planet Safaris begins with a gradual descent through the bamboo zone. This section often feels wet and muddy due to moisture retained by fallen bamboo leaves, especially after rainfall.
As you descend to around 2,600 meters, the bamboo forest transitions into Afro-montane forest. You pass above Sine Rock Shelter before reaching the base of the ridge. Here, you cross a fast-flowing stream and continue to Musenge Rock Shelter.
You stop for lunch and a short rest before completing the final 6 km through dense forest back to the ranger post at 1,727 meters. After a brief debriefing and sign-out process, you walk back to Trekkers Hostel, marking the successful end of your Rwenzori adventure.
Wild Planet Safaris ensures that this 4-day trek delivers not only physical adventure but also deep immersion into one of Africa’s most unique mountain ecosystems. From lush forests and bamboo zones to alpine ridges and glacier-shaped valleys, every day offers new discoveries and unforgettable scenery.
Whether you seek adventure, nature, or solitude, Wild Planet Safaris provides a professionally guided and well-supported journey into the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains.
