This 5-day Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Wildlife Safari combines unforgettable wildlife encounters with scenic landscapes and rich biodiversity. The journey takes you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a once-in-a-lifetime mountain gorilla trekking experience, followed by classic game drives and a boat safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Along the way, you’ll spot a variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, hippos, and numerous bird species, while enjoying Uganda’s stunning countryside. This safari is perfect for travelers seeking both adventure and iconic African wildlife experiences.
Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala by your professional driver-guide, who will accompany you throughout your safari. After a short briefing, you’ll set off on a scenic drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in the western part of Uganda. This park is the most popular savannah reserve in the country and is home to a wide array of wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, antelope, and hippos.
Along the way, you’ll travel through beautiful rural landscapes, tea plantations, and crater lakes, with opportunities to stop for photos or snacks. You’ll also cross the Equator at Kayabwe, where you can take iconic photos and witness the famous Coriolis water experiment.
After approximately 6–7 hours of travel, you’ll arrive at Irungu Forest Safari Lodge, a comfortable and eco-friendly accommodation nestled close to the park. After check-in and some time to relax, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and settle in for the night surrounded by the sounds of the wild.
You’ll begin the day with an early morning game drive in the Kasenyi Plains, one of the best spots in Queen Elizabeth for wildlife viewing. With the rising sun casting a golden glow over the savannah, you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of animals including Ugandan kob, elephants, warthogs, lions, and possibly even a leopard if you’re lucky. Your guide will share interesting insights about the animal behaviors and ecosystem.
After the game drive, you’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and some relaxation before heading out again in the afternoon for a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. This boat safari offers an up-close look at one of the highest concentrations of hippos in the world, along with crocodiles, buffaloes, and countless bird species, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, and pelicans. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a peaceful way to experience the park’s aquatic life.
Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and your overnight stay at Irungu Forest Safari Lodge.
After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll check out of the lodge and begin your drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. This journey takes you through the scenic Ishasha sector, a region of Queen Elizabeth known for its tree-climbing lions, so keep your eyes peeled for these unique predators lounging in fig trees.
You’ll continue south through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and traditional villages until you reach the southern sector of Bwindi, specifically Rushaga, which offers one of the best gorilla trekking experiences in the region. Upon arrival, you’ll check in at Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge, a charming lodge surrounded by dense forest and offering sweeping views of the park.
Spend your evening relaxing in this serene environment, perhaps enjoying a hot shower and a drink by the fire, followed by dinner at the lodge’s restaurant. Rest well—you have a life-changing experience ahead.
This is the most anticipated day of your safari. After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where your gorilla adventure begins. At the ranger station, you’ll receive a detailed briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority staff about the rules and etiquette for gorilla trekking.
You’ll be assigned to a small group and led by expert guides and trackers into the thick, ancient rainforest. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family you’re tracking. The terrain is rugged and can be steep, but the reward is immense. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend a magical hour with them in their natural habitat—observing their interactions, watching them feed, and possibly even catching the curious gaze of a young one.
It’s a humbling and unforgettable experience that few people in the world get to enjoy. After the trek, you’ll return to the lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest. The afternoon is free to relax or participate in optional activities like a community visit to learn about the Batwa pygmies or a nature walk.
Dinner and overnight will be at Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge.
After breakfast, you’ll check out and begin the return journey to Entebbe, a long but scenic drive through Uganda’s countryside. Enjoy your final views of the lush landscapes, roadside markets, and rural communities. There will be a stop for lunch along the way and plenty of chances to stretch and take photos.
Arrival in Entebbe is expected in the late afternoon or early evening, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport, depending on your departure plans. This marks the end of your incredible 5-day safari, filled with unforgettable wildlife encounters and stunning natural beauty.
