5 Days Bwindi Gorillas & Kibale Chimpanzee Safari. This 5 Days (4 Nights) Bwindi Gorillas & Kibale Chimpanzee Safari is a remarkable primate-focused adventure designed to immerse you in Uganda’s most celebrated rainforests. Carefully curated by Wild Planet, this safari takes you to Kibale Forest National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, two of the best destinations in Africa for tracking endangered primates in their natural habitats.
The journey begins in western Uganda at Kibale Forest National Park, famously known as the Primate Capital of the World due to its high concentration of chimpanzees and other monkey species. Here, you will enjoy an unforgettable chimpanzee tracking experience and a guided nature walk through the scenic Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
You will then travel south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Guided by experienced rangers, you will trek through dense rainforest vegetation to encounter a habituated gorilla family and spend one magical hour observing these gentle giants at close range.
This safari combines wildlife, scenery, culture, and conservation into a perfectly balanced Ugandan adventure.
Your safari adventure with Wild Planet begins with an early morning pickup from Urban City Blue Hotel in Kampala. After meeting your professional safari guide, you will embark on a scenic drive westwards toward Kibale Forest National Park, traveling through the lush countryside via Mityana and Mubende.
Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful views of tea plantations, small villages, and rolling hills that characterize western Uganda. You will stop in Fort Portal Town for lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a short town tour. Fort Portal sits at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains and is known for its relaxed atmosphere, colonial history, and stunning crater lakes.
After lunch, you will continue your drive to Kibale Forest National Park and check in at your selected lodge. The remainder of the day is reserved for relaxation as you prepare for the chimpanzee trek the following morning.
Dinner and Overnight Stay:
After an early breakfast, your guide will drive you to Kanyanchu Visitor Center, the main chimpanzee trekking starting point in Kibale Forest National Park. Upon arrival, you will receive a comprehensive briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials, who will explain trekking guidelines, safety measures, and chimpanzee behavior.
Accompanied by experienced park rangers, you will then enter the tropical rainforest to begin your chimpanzee tracking adventure. Kibale Forest boasts the highest density of chimpanzees in Africa, making sightings highly likely. As you walk through the forest, listen for loud pant-hoots and calls echoing through the canopy, signaling the presence of chimpanzees nearby.
Chimpanzees share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, and observing their social interactions, feeding habits, and playful behavior is both educational and fascinating. In addition to chimpanzees, you may encounter other primates such as red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, white-and-black colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and blue monkeys.
Kibale Forest is also a birding hotspot, hosting species like the Great Blue Turaco, African Pied Kingfisher, Green-breasted Pitta, and many forest endemics.
After the trek, you will return to the lodge for lunch and some rest. In the afternoon, you will visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed swamp located on the edge of the park. A guided nature walk through the swamp offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching and spotting wetland wildlife, including monkeys and butterflies. The visit also supports local community conservation initiatives.
Dinner and Overnight Stay:
After breakfast, you will explore the Crater Lake Region, one of the most scenic landscapes in Uganda. Your guide will take you to panoramic viewpoints, including the famous “Top of the World”, where you can enjoy sweeping views of crater lakes, rolling hills, and distant mountains.
Later in the morning, you will depart Kibale Forest National Park and begin your journey south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This scenic drive passes through rural villages, terraced farmlands, and forested hills. Along the way, you will observe daily life in rural Uganda and enjoy numerous photography opportunities.
Upon arrival in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, you will check in at your lodge and spend the evening relaxing as you prepare for the highlight of the safari—gorilla trekking.
Dinner and Overnight Stay:
This day marks the pinnacle of your safari with Wild Planet. After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Rushaga Gorilla Briefing Point. Here, park rangers will brief you on gorilla trekking rules, safety precautions, and proper behavior while in the presence of mountain gorillas.
After the briefing, you will be assigned a gorilla family based on your fitness level and trekking ability. Led by armed rangers and trackers, you will enter the dense rainforest to begin your search. Gorilla trekking can take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas and the terrain.
The trek is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. Once you locate the gorilla family, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them at close range. You will watch them feed, groom each other, play, and rest—an emotional and humbling experience few people ever get to witness.
Photography is allowed, but flash cameras are strictly prohibited. Silence and calm behavior are required to ensure the gorillas remain relaxed.
After the trek, you will return to the lodge for rest, dinner, and reflection on one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on Earth.
Dinner and Overnight Stay:
After breakfast, you will begin your return journey to Kampala. The drive takes you through the beautiful highlands of Kabale, often referred to as the Switzerland of Africa due to its rolling hills and terraced landscapes.
You will stop in Mbarara Town for lunch and refreshments before continuing to Kampala. You will arrive in the late evening, where your Wild Planet guide will drop you off at your hotel, marking the end of an incredible safari experience.
