The 8 Days Climbing Rwenzori Mountains Tour in Africa is an exhilarating adventure designed for passionate hikers and mountaineering enthusiasts. Organized by Wild planet, this tour takes you into the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, famously known as the Mountains of the Moon. The Rwenzori range is the fourth-highest mountain range in Africa and is celebrated for its dramatic scenery, challenging terrain, slippery and muddy trails, steep ascents, and frequent rainfall.
Mount Rwenzori offers one of the most demanding hiking experiences on the continent due to its high altitude, rugged landscape, and unpredictable weather. However, the reward is immense—spectacular alpine vegetation, glaciers near the equator, and the opportunity to summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley, the highest point in Uganda.
Abunda Discoveries recommends climbing Mount Rwenzori during the relatively drier months:
Although rainfall can occur at any time, these months offer better trail conditions and improved visibility for summit attempts.
To ensure safety and comfort during the climb, climbers should carry personal hiking equipment, including:
Proper gear is essential due to the cold temperatures, wet conditions, and high-altitude environment.
Your journey with Abunda Discoveries begins with an early morning departure from Entebbe or Kampala. Enjoy a scenic drive through western Uganda, passing tea plantations, crater lakes, and rural villages. Arrive near Nyakalengija, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the climb.
After breakfast, meet your mountain guides and porters at the park headquarters for registration and a safety briefing. Start the hike through dense tropical rainforest, where you may spot monkeys, birds, and unique plant species. Continue ascending until you reach Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Today’s hike becomes steeper and more challenging. Cross the Mubuku River via the Kurt Shafer Bridge and trek through bamboo forests and giant heather. The trail is often muddy and slippery, making this day physically demanding. Arrive at John Matte Hut in the afternoon for rest and overnight.
Trek through the famous Bigo Bog, using wooden boardwalks laid across swampy ground. As you gain altitude, enjoy panoramic views of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke. Reach Bujuku Hut, located near Lake Bujuku, for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, continue hiking into the alpine zone dominated by giant lobelias and groundsels. This acclimatization day prepares your body for the summit attempt. Depending on weather and group pace, you will overnight at Elena Hut or Kitandara Hut.
Summit day begins very early, often before dawn. With the guidance of experienced mountaineering guides, you climb across glaciers, snow, and rocky ridges using ropes and crampons to reach Margherita Peak, the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains.
After celebrating your achievement, carefully descend to Kitandara Hut for dinner and a well-earned rest.
Begin your descent by crossing Freshfield Pass (4,282m), one of the most scenic sections of the Rwenzori trek. Continue downhill through changing vegetation zones until you reach Nyabitaba Hut, where you spend your final night on the mountain.
After breakfast, complete the final descent to Nyakalengija trailhead. Meet your driver and transfer back to Entebbe or Kampala, arriving in the evening and marking the end of your unforgettable Rwenzori Mountains adventure with Abunda Discoveries.
