Best Airstrips for Bwindi & Kibale (2027)

Airstrips for Bwindi. Best Airstrips Uganda, Uganda is one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations, offering unforgettable experiences in diverse landscapes. From mountain gorilla trekking in the ancient forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park, travelers can enjoy remarkable wildlife encounters while exploring the country’s beautiful countryside.

Best Airstrips for Bwindi & Kibale (2027). However, getting to these destinations requires careful planning. Bwindi and Kibale are located far from Uganda’s main international gateway at Entebbe International Airport. Although road travel offers a scenic way to explore the country, long driving distances can take valuable time from a short holiday. For this reason, flying to a nearby airstrip can be an excellent option for travelers who want to spend more time enjoying Uganda’s wildlife and less time on the road.

In 2027, visitors planning a Uganda safari can consider several airstrips that provide access to Bwindi and Kibale. The most important options include Kihihi Airstrip, Kisoro Airstrip, and Kasese Airstrip. Each serves a different location, so choosing the right one depends on your safari itinerary, gorilla trekking sector, lodge location, and onward travel plans.

Bwindi does not have an airstrip inside the national park itself. Instead, travelers fly to nearby airstrips and continue by road to their lodge and trekking headquarters. Kihihi is generally convenient for the northern and eastern parts of Bwindi, while Kisoro is particularly useful for travelers visiting the southern sectors. For Kibale National Park, Kasese is an important air gateway, followed by a road transfer toward the forest.

Therefore, understanding the best airstrips for visiting Bwindi and Kibale National Parks can help you create a smoother, more comfortable, and time-efficient safari in 2027.

Why Choose the Best Airstrips Uganda for Bwindi and Kibale National Parks?

Best Airstrips for Bwindi & Kibale (2027). Before looking at individual airstrips, it is important to understand why flying can improve your Uganda safari experience.

Airstrips for Bwindi. Uganda has excellent road connections between its major tourism destinations. Nevertheless, some journeys can take several hours because of the distance and road conditions. For example, travelers driving from Entebbe or Kampala to southwestern Uganda may spend much of a day on the road.

Best Airstrips Uganda , Flying allows you to reduce the time spent traveling between destinations. Furthermore, domestic flights provide a fascinating aerial perspective of Uganda’s landscapes. As you fly over the country, you may see rolling hills, forests, lakes, farmland, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Flying is particularly useful for:

• Travelers with limited vacation time
• Luxury safari travelers
• Visitors combining several national parks
• Families who prefer shorter road transfers
• Travelers arriving in Uganda for gorilla trekking
• Visitors combining Bwindi with Kibale
• Photographers and birdwatchers who want more time in nature
• Honeymooners looking for a comfortable safari experience

However, flying does not eliminate road transfers completely. Because Bwindi and Kibale do not have major commercial airports within the parks, travelers still need a safari vehicle for the final journey. Therefore, the best safari operators carefully coordinate flights, airstrip pickups, accommodation, and park activities.

The Best Airstrips for Visiting Bwindi National Park

1. Kihihi Airstrip

Kihihi Airstrip is one of the most useful air gateways for travelers visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is located in Kanungu District in southwestern Uganda and provides access to several areas around the northern and eastern parts of Bwindi.

For many travelers, Kihihi is a practical choice when their gorilla trekking permit is in the Buhoma or Ruhija sectors. However, your exact transfer time will depend on your lodge and the location of your trekking headquarters.

After landing at Kihihi, visitors continue their journey by safari vehicle. The road transfer provides an opportunity to experience the countryside and local communities before reaching the forest.

Airstrips for Bwindi. Kihihi can also work well for travelers who want to combine Bwindi with other destinations in western Uganda. Depending on the itinerary, your safari can include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park, or other attractions.

Best Airstrips Uganda , One of the biggest advantages of using Kihihi is convenience. Instead of spending many hours traveling from Entebbe by road, you can fly closer to the Bwindi region and continue your journey by vehicle.

Airstrips for Bwindi. However, travelers should always confirm the latest flight schedules and airstrip conditions before booking. Domestic flight schedules can change according to operational requirements, weather, and seasonal demand.

2. Kisoro Airstrip

For travelers visiting the southern side of Bwindi, Kisoro Airstrip is another excellent option.

Kisoro is located in southwestern Uganda, close to the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its strategic location makes it particularly useful for visitors heading toward the southern Bwindi sectors, including Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Kisoro can also be a convenient gateway for travelers visiting Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Airstrips for Bwindi. The choice between Kihihi and Kisoro should therefore depend primarily on your trekking sector. This is important because Bwindi is a large forest with different gorilla trekking sectors spread across the region. Selecting an airstrip that matches your permit location can reduce unnecessary road transfers.

For example, if your gorilla trekking permit is for Rushaga or Nkuringo, flying toward Kisoro may make more sense than landing at Kihihi and traveling across the region.

Airstrips for Bwindi. Similarly, travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking with a visit to Rwanda may find the Kisoro area strategically located for certain cross-border itineraries. Nevertheless, border procedures and travel requirements should be checked in advance.

Kisoro Airstrip therefore deserves a place among the best airstrips for visiting Bwindi National Park in 2027, especially for visitors heading to the southern trekking sectors.

3. Kayonza Airstrip and Other Charter Options

Depending on your itinerary and flight operator, charter options may provide additional flexibility for reaching the Bwindi region.

Kayonza has been referenced as an air access option for the northern side of Bwindi, although travelers should confirm current operational arrangements before relying on it for a 2027 itinerary. Airstrip availability, flight schedules, and aircraft operations can change over time.

For this reason, visitors should not simply choose an airstrip based on distance alone. Instead, a professional safari operator should consider:

• Your gorilla trekking sector
• Your lodge location
• Your arrival time
• Your onward destination
• Available domestic flight schedules
• Road transfer conditions
• Weather and seasonal considerations

This approach helps ensure that the airstrip you choose actually makes your safari easier.

The Best Airstrip for Visiting Kibale National Park

4. Kasese Airstrip

Kibale National Park is famous worldwide for its chimpanzee trekking experiences and remarkable primate diversity. It is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, forest walks, and nature experiences.

Unlike Bwindi, however, visitors planning to fly to Kibale need to understand that the park does not have a major commercial airport directly inside the forest. Instead, travelers can use nearby air access points and continue by road.

Kasese Airstrip is an important option for travelers flying into western Uganda and continuing toward the Kibale region.

After arriving in Kasese, visitors can continue by road toward Kibale National Park. The exact transfer time depends on the location of the lodge and the route used.

Kasese can be particularly useful when Kibale forms part of a wider western Uganda safari. For example, travelers may combine Kibale with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Semuliki National Park, or Bwindi.

Best Airstrips Uganda , This makes Kasese a practical option for travelers who want to experience several attractions without returning to Entebbe between destinations.

However, it is important to understand that Kasese is not directly inside Kibale National Park. Therefore, travelers should plan for a road transfer after landing. Current flight schedules and transfer arrangements should also be confirmed before booking, as domestic aviation services can change.

Which Airstrip Should You Choose for Bwindi?

Choosing the right airstrip for Bwindi depends mainly on your gorilla trekking sector.

Choose Kihihi when:

• You are trekking in Buhoma.
• You are visiting Ruhija.
• Your lodge is located closer to the northern or eastern side of Bwindi.
• Your itinerary includes northern Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
• You want to reduce the long road journey from Entebbe.

Choose Kisoro when:

• You are trekking in Rushaga.
• You are visiting Nkuringo.
• You want to explore the southern side of Bwindi.
• You are combining Bwindi with Mgahinga.
• Your itinerary connects naturally with southwestern Uganda or Rwanda.

The most important point is to book your gorilla permit and confirm your trekking sector before finalizing your flight arrangements. This allows your safari operator to recommend the most practical airstrip and organize the correct road transfer.

Because gorilla trekking permits are associated with specific trekking sectors, choosing an airstrip without considering your permit location could result in a longer transfer than necessary.

Which Airstrip Should You Choose for Kibale?

For Kibale National Park, your choice will depend on your overall western Uganda itinerary.

Kasese can be useful for travelers flying into the region before continuing to Kibale by road. However, if your itinerary already includes other destinations, your safari operator may recommend a different route based on available flights and driving distances.

For example, if you are visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park before Kibale, traveling by road may be more convenient than flying. Similarly, if you are combining Kibale and Bwindi, your operator can design the itinerary around the most efficient combination of domestic flights and road transfers.

Therefore, there is no single airstrip that is perfect for every Kibale itinerary. The best option depends on your arrival point, activities, accommodation, and the destinations you plan to visit afterward.

Can You Combine the Best Airstrips in Uganda for a Bwindi and Kibale Safari?

Absolutely.

Airstrips for Bwindi. Combining Bwindi and Kibale National Parks is one of the best ways to experience Uganda’s incredible primate diversity.

Kibale is often called one of Africa’s premier destinations for chimpanzee trekking. Bwindi, meanwhile, is internationally recognized for mountain gorilla trekking.

Best Airstrips Uganda , A safari combining both destinations can therefore give you two completely different forest experiences.

A typical itinerary might include:

Arrival in Uganda and transfer to your first destination
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park
Forest or cultural experience around Kibale.

Travel toward Bwindi

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
Departure or continuation to another destination

For travelers with more time, the itinerary can include Queen Elizabeth National Park between Kibale and Bwindi. This creates an exciting combination of chimpanzee trekking, wildlife viewing, boat safaris, and gorilla trekking.

Alternatively, travelers can use domestic flights to reduce some of the longer road journeys. Your safari operator can determine whether flying, driving, or combining both options provides the best experience.

Book Early

If you are traveling during a busy safari season, consider arranging domestic flights early. This is especially important if you have fixed gorilla trekking dates.

Your gorilla permit, accommodation, and flight schedule should work together.

This simple step can help your safari operator select the most convenient airport or airstrip.

Check Baggage Restrictions
