The trip of a lifetime is organizing a trekking safaris with gorilla and chimpanzee safari in Uganda. Witnessing a group of chimpanzees swing through the canopy while hooting madly or standing meters apart from a 200kg silverback gorilla as he eats leaves are two experiences that are unlike any other. The only place in the world where you can consistently see chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in top-notch protected forests—all in one amazing trip—is Uganda.
Half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population is found in Uganda, where there are about 500 in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and another 50+ in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Chimpanzees flourish here as well; Kibale National Park alone is home to over 1,500 of them, earning it the moniker “Primate Capital of the World.”
Trekking entails traveling deep into foggy rainforests with knowledgeable rangers who are familiar with all local populations. You spend two to four hours with chimps and one enchanting hour with the gorillas (or up to four hours on a habituation session). The payoff is transformative, but the terrain is sometimes muddy and difficult.
Although Uganda is a year-round destination, trekking is much more enjoyable during the dry seasons:
The peak dry season lasts from June to September. In Kibale, trails are the clearest, gorilla sightings are the best, and chimp tracking is the best.
The second dry season runs from December to February. Beautiful bright skies, cheaper pricing during shoulder months, and fewer people than in July and August.
Avoid (if you can): Prolonged rains in March through May and October through November, as they can turn roads into slick rivers and reduce visibility. Although permits are still available and occasionally less expensive, be ready for mud.
Pro tip: Reserve your gorilla permit for June–August or December–January six to twelve months in advance. The closer the date gets, the easier it is to obtain chimp permits.
There is only one habituated population in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which is peaceful and blends well with hiking volcanoes and tracking golden monkeys.
$1,500 USD for a foreign non-resident
Permits are tightly regulated, so never purchase them on the illegal market.
Day 1–2: Fly or drive to Kibale after arriving in Entebbe. Bigodi Wetland Walk + Chimp Trek in the afternoon.
Gorilla trekking may require two to seven hours of strenuous hiking at a height of 1,500 to 2,500 meters. For two to three months prior, train with aerobic and hill walks.
Use porters (US$15–20) to carry your main suitcase!
Gorillas must be at least 15, and chimps must be between 12 and 15 (confirm with the operator).
Keep a 7-meter distance from primates and refrain from sneezing or coughing.
Your visit helps to fund conservation by supporting Batwa experiences and community lodges.
