Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering an area of just 34 square kilometers. Despite its size, the park offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. As visitors approach from the east, towering volcanic cones dominate the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop for adventure and wildlife experiences.
The park lies in southwestern Uganda and forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, a transboundary ecosystem shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Together, the three countries protect approximately 434 square kilometers of the Virunga Mountains.
Mgahinga National Park sits on the northern slopes of three extinct volcanoes:
Mount Muhavura (4,127 meters)
Mount Sabinyo (3,645 meters)
” ” ” ” Gahinga (3,474 meters)
The park borders Rwanda to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The surrounding region is mainly inhabited by the Bafumbira people, with a small population of the indigenous Batwa community, who have a rich cultural history closely connected to the forest.
Mgahinga National Park is home to one habituated mountain gorilla family, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group. This group moves freely across the international borders within the Virunga Conservation Area, making each trek a unique experience.
Gorilla trekking takes place only when the gorillas are within Uganda’s section of the park. With Abunda Discoveries, visitors receive up-to-date tracking information to maximize their chances of a successful trek.
