After breakfast, your Wild Planet driver-guide meets you in Kampala and begins your journey eastward to Jinja, a drive of approximately two hours. Upon arrival, you visit the legendary Source of the Nile, where the mighty River Nile begins its long journey northward. Here, you enjoy scenic views, learn about the river’s historical significance, and capture memorable photographs.
Next, you proceed to the Kingdom of Busoga’s royal palace to gain insight into the traditions of the Basoga people. You explore the cultural heritage of Busoga, learn about the structure of the kingdom, and understand the role of the reigning monarch in preserving local identity and customs.
In the afternoon, Wild Planet continues the journey to Mbale. As you drive through rolling hills and rural landscapes, your guide shares stories about the communities you pass. Upon arrival in Mbale, you check into your accommodation, relax, and prepare for the cultural experiences ahead.
After breakfast, Wild Planet drives you to the Teso sub-region in Eastern Uganda. This area showcases a vibrant cultural identity shaped by agriculture, storytelling, music, and communal living.
You begin by visiting a local fishermen’s village, where you observe daily life along the water. You interact with fishermen, learn about traditional fishing methods, and understand how fishing supports local families.
Later, you travel to the Nyero Rock Paintings, one of Uganda’s most significant historical sites. These ancient rock art panels reflect early human settlement and spiritual expression in the region. Your guide explains the symbolism behind the paintings and the archaeological importance of the site.
Throughout the day, you engage with local communities, ask questions, and experience genuine hospitality. Wild Planet encourages respectful interaction and meaningful cultural exchange, allowing you to connect deeply with the Teso people.
In the morning, your Wild Planet safari guide drives you to Kapchorwa District, approximately a two-hour journey from Mbale. Upon arrival, you check into your lodge and enjoy lunch before heading out to explore Sipi Falls.
Located in the foothills of Mount Elgon near Mount Elgon National Park and close to the Kenyan border, Sipi Falls consists of three spectacular waterfalls. The highest waterfall plunges approximately 100 meters down a dramatic cliff face.
Depending on your fitness level and interest, you hike to two or all three waterfalls. Along the trails, you pass coffee farms, local homesteads, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking valleys and distant plains. Your Wild Planet guide ensures safety while explaining the ecological and cultural significance of the area.
After your hike, you return to your lodge to relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.
Wild Planet departs early for Moroto, the gateway to the Karamoja sub-region. The drive takes several hours and reveals increasingly rugged and semi-arid landscapes. Upon arrival, you check into your lodge and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, you visit the Karamoja Museum and the Ateker Cultural Center, where you learn about the history, migration patterns, and customs of the Karamojong and related Ateker-speaking groups.
Later, you take an evening walk around Moroto town. As you explore, you observe daily life and appreciate the dramatic backdrop of Mount Moroto. Wild Planet prepares you for deeper cultural engagement in the coming days.
You begin your day with a guided hike up Mount Moroto. Accompanied by experienced local guides, you ascend through scenic terrain until you reach communities of the Tepeth people, one of the indigenous groups of Karamoja.
At the summit area, you interact respectfully with the Tepeth community, learn about their traditions, and gain insight into how they preserve their identity in a changing world. The breathtaking scenery enhances this meaningful cultural exchange.
Later, you explore the Karamoja region further through a cycling or motorbike tour across open plains and traditional homesteads. In the afternoon, you attend a cultural village ceremony featuring traditional dance, music, and storytelling.
As evening approaches, Wild Planet escorts you to a traditional cattle camp (kraal). Here, you experience pastoral life firsthand and camp near the kraal under the vast African sky.
After breakfast, Wild Planet drives you to the base of Mount Morungole in the northern hills of Karamoja. This remote mountain is home to the IK people, one of Uganda’s smallest and most unique ethnic groups.
You hike up the ridges of Mount Morungole, enjoying sweeping views of valleys stretching toward Kenya’s Eastern Rift Valley and South Sudan. Upon reaching the IK community, you engage in a rare and authentic cultural encounter. You learn about their resilience, social structure, and adaptation to mountain life.
After descending, you transfer to your accommodation in Kaabong for dinner and overnight relaxation.
Wild Planet introduces you to the Dodoth community in Kaabong, a subgroup of the Karamojong. You explore their homesteads, observe daily activities, and learn about their pastoral traditions.
You then drive approximately three to four hours to Kotido, where you visit the Jie community. Known historically as warriors, the Jie share deep-rooted traditions and communal values.
Depending on the day of travel, you may visit the traditional cattle market (held on Wednesdays). This vibrant market allows you to witness livestock trading, community interaction, and traditional attire in full display.
Later, Wild Planet returns you to Moroto, where you spend the night near a kraal. You participate in bringing cattle back to the enclosure, interact with herders, share stories, and gain a deeper understanding of nomadic life.
After breakfast, Wild Planet guides you to a Karamojong village for a full-day cultural immersion. You actively participate in daily activities such as preparing staple foods, harvesting, beading, traditional dance, friendly wrestling, and learning archery with bow and arrow.
This hands-on experience allows you to understand pastoral life beyond observation. You engage respectfully and leave with meaningful memories.
