Where Is Nyungwe Forest National Park?

Nyungwe Forest National Park is situated in southwestern Rwanda, stretching across the districts of Nyamasheke, Rusizi, Karongi, and Nyaruguru. Covering more than 1,000 square kilometers, the park protects one of Africa’s largest remaining montane rainforests.

Furthermore, Nyungwe lies close to the border with Burundi and forms part of the Albertine Rift, a region internationally recognized as one of Africa’s biodiversity hotspots. Because of its remarkable ecological importance, the forest plays a vital role in climate regulation, water conservation, and wildlife protection.

The park is approximately 225 kilometers from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. Depending on road conditions and traffic, the drive takes between five and six hours. Fortunately, Rwanda’s well-maintained roads make the journey comfortable, while the scenic countryside provides beautiful views throughout the trip.

Many travelers combine Nyungwe with Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park to create a complete Rwanda safari experience.

Why Visit Nyungwe Forest National Park in 2027?

There are many reasons why Nyungwe continues to rank among Africa’s finest ecotourism destinations. Unlike traditional savannah parks that focus mainly on large mammals, Nyungwe offers immersive rainforest adventures that appeal to nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, hikers, researchers, and families alike.

One of the park’s greatest attractions is its extraordinary biodiversity. Scientists have recorded more than:

• 13 primate species
• Over 320 bird species
• More than 1,000 plant species
• Approximately 85 mammal species
• Hundreds of butterfly species
• Numerous reptiles and amphibians

As a result, every visit presents exciting opportunities to discover something new.

Equally important, Rwanda has invested heavily in conservation and sustainable tourism. Therefore, visitors enjoy well-managed trails, experienced guides, secure tourism infrastructure, and carefully protected wildlife habitats.

Wildlife in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest is internationally famous for its incredible diversity of wildlife. Although the park is best known for chimpanzees, many other fascinating species also thrive within the rainforest.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees remain the park’s biggest attraction. These intelligent primates share approximately 98 percent of human DNA and display remarkably social behaviors.

Chimpanzee trekking begins early in the morning as experienced guides lead visitors through the dense rainforest in search of habituated groups. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, success rates are generally very high because expert trackers monitor chimpanzee movements daily.

Watching chimpanzees swing through towering trees, communicate with one another, and forage naturally creates an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Other Primates

Besides chimpanzees, Nyungwe Forest supports twelve additional primate species, making it one of Africa’s premier primate destinations.

Visitors may encounter:

• L’Hoest’s monkeys
• Angola colobus monkeys
• Owl-faced monkeys
• Blue monkeys
• Grey-cheeked mangabeys
• Dent’s mona monkeys

Walking above ancient treetops provides visitors with a unique perspective rarely experienced elsewhere in Africa.

Additionally, lucky visitors may observe monkeys moving through the canopy, colorful birds flying below eye level, and butterflies drifting among towering trees.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

One of the biggest highlights of this Nyungwe Forest National Park Travel Guide 2027 is the unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience. Every year, thousands of visitors travel to Nyungwe to observe wild chimpanzees in their natural rainforest habitat. Unlike a traditional game drive, chimpanzee trekking is an active adventure that takes you deep into one of Africa’s oldest montane forests.

The trek begins early in the morning before sunrise. Visitors gather at the designated reception center, where experienced park guides provide a briefing on safety regulations and trekking etiquette. Afterward, groups head into the forest alongside expert trackers who monitor the chimpanzees’ movements daily.

Because chimpanzees are highly active and constantly on the move, each trek is unique. Sometimes the animals are located within an hour, while on other occasions visitors may hike longer through the forest before finding them. Nevertheless, the excitement of hearing their loud calls echo through the trees makes the journey worthwhile.

Once the chimpanzees are found, visitors are allowed approximately one hour to observe and photograph them. During this time, you can watch them feed, groom each other, swing effortlessly through the trees, and interact within their family groups. It is an incredible wildlife encounter that creates lasting memories.

For the best experience, wear comfortable hiking boots, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, gardening gloves for steep sections, and carry enough drinking water. In addition, bring a waterproof jacket because rainforest weather can change quickly.

Nyungwe Forest National Park Hiking Trails

Besides chimpanzee trekking, Nyungwe is famous for its extensive network of hiking trails. In fact, the park has more than 130 kilometers of well-maintained trails that allow visitors to explore different ecosystems and landscapes.

Whether you prefer a short nature walk or a challenging full-day hike, Nyungwe offers something for every fitness level.

Igishigishigi Trail

The Igishigishigi Trail is one of the park’s most popular routes because it includes the famous canopy walkway. Lasting around two hours, this trail is ideal for travelers with limited time who still want spectacular rainforest views.

Bigugu Trail

Adventure enthusiasts often choose the Bigugu Trail, which leads to one of the highest peaks in the park. Along the way, hikers enjoy panoramic views of Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu, and the surrounding mountains.

Kamiranzovu Trail

Nature lovers appreciate the Kamiranzovu Trail for its beautiful wetland ecosystem. This trail passes through marshes, forest clearings, and scenic viewpoints while offering excellent opportunities to spot birds and unique plant species.

Waterfall Trail

The Waterfall Trail takes visitors through dense rainforest before reaching one of Nyungwe’s picturesque waterfalls. Along the route, hikers may encounter colorful butterflies, orchids, monkeys, and many bird species.

Umuyove Trail

This peaceful trail is perfect for visitors interested in the park’s towering mahogany trees and rich botanical diversity. It is relatively easy and suitable for families.

Because each trail showcases different habitats, many visitors spend several days exploring multiple routes.

The Canopy Walk Experience

No Nyungwe Forest National Park Travel Guide 2027 would be complete without highlighting the famous canopy walkway in greater detail.

Suspended approximately 70 meters above the forest floor, the bridge provides one of the most thrilling rainforest experiences in Africa. From this elevated position, visitors enjoy breathtaking views across endless green treetops while observing wildlife from an entirely different perspective.

Moreover, the canopy walk allows photographers to capture stunning landscape images that are impossible to obtain from the forest floor. During the walk, visitors frequently spot monkeys, colorful birds, butterflies, and even orchids growing high in the trees.

Although some travelers are initially nervous because of the height, the bridge is professionally maintained and carefully inspected to ensure visitor safety. Experienced guides accompany every group and provide instructions throughout the activity.

Flora and Biodiversity

Beyond its wildlife, Nyungwe Forest is celebrated for its extraordinary plant diversity. Scientists have documented more than 1,000 plant species, many of which are found only within the Albertine Rift region.

The forest features towering mahogany trees, giant ferns, bamboo stands, orchids, medicinal plants, moss-covered trunks, and colorful flowering shrubs. As you hike through the rainforest, every section reveals a different ecological community.

Furthermore, Nyungwe plays a vital role in protecting Rwanda’s water resources. The forest forms part of the Congo-Nile Divide and supplies water to both the Nile and Congo River basins. Therefore, conserving this ecosystem benefits not only wildlife but also millions of people across Central and East Africa.

On the other hand, the rainy seasons—from March to May and October to November—transform the rainforest into an incredibly lush and vibrant landscape.
