Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi. At Wild Planet Safaris, we proudly introduce you to one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations—the Rushaga Gorilla Sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This remarkable sector stands out as the most diverse and rewarding region for gorilla trekking, offering unmatched opportunities to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Rushaga hosts 10 habituated gorilla families, the highest number among all four sectors of Bwindi. It also remains the only sector in Uganda where visitors can participate in the gorilla habituation experience, making it a top choice for travelers seeking deeper, more immersive encounters.
Wild Planet Safaris takes you to the southern part of Bwindi, where Rushaga Sector offers breathtaking landscapes and unique geographic advantages. The sector lies close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, giving visitors stunning views of the iconic Virunga Mountains stretching across the horizon.
The rolling hills, dense rainforest, and mist-covered valleys create a magical atmosphere that enhances every gorilla trekking experience. Visitors enjoy not only wildlife encounters but also unforgettable panoramic scenery.
At Wild Planet Safaris, we emphasize the global importance of Bwindi. The park is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas, representing more than half of the world’s remaining population. These gentle giants live only within the protected Virunga Conservation Area, which spans across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This conservation area includes:
Wild Planet Safaris ensures that every visit contributes to conservation efforts while delivering a life-changing experience.
Rushaga Sector delivers exceptional gorilla trekking experiences through its diverse and fascinating gorilla families. Each group has its own story, leadership structure, and behavior patterns. Below is a detailed look at all 10 families, curated by Wild Planet Safaris.
The Mishaya Gorilla Family originated from the larger Nshongi group. The dominant silverback, Mishaya, broke away to form his own group due to his aggressive and ambitious nature. He frequently raided other gorilla groups to attract females.
Wild Planet Safaris highlights this family as one of the most dynamic groups in Rushaga. Initially starting with only 7 members, the family grew to about 12 individuals under Mishaya’s leadership.
The Nshongi Gorilla Family derives its name from the nearby Nshongi River. It once stood as the largest habituated gorilla family in Bwindi, with over 32 members.
Wild Planet Safaris notes that this peaceful group later split into smaller families, including Bweza and Bikingi, leaving Nshongi with around 10 members today. Despite the split, it remains one of the most stable and harmonious groups.
Wild Planet Safaris introduces the Kahungye Gorilla Family as one of the most prominent groups in Rushaga. Researchers habituated this family over two years before opening it for trekking in 2011.
Originally consisting of 29 members, the group experienced internal conflicts that reduced its size to about 17 individuals. These disputes led to the formation of other families such as Busingye and Tindatine. Today, the dominant silverback Rumanzi leads the group.
The Bweza Gorilla Family split from the Nshongi group and later separated from Mishaya. The silverback Bweza established this family with several females.
Wild Planet Safaris recommends this group for visitors seeking a moderate trekking experience, as the family often inhabits accessible areas of the forest.
The name “Busingye” means peace in the local Rukiga language, but the family’s history tells a different story. The dominant silverback Busingye earned a reputation as a powerful and aggressive leader.
Wild Planet Safaris explains that this family tends to stay deep within the forest, making tracking more challenging but highly rewarding. The group currently consists of around 10 members.
The Bikingi Gorilla Family formed after the collapse of the Mishaya group following the death of its leader in 2014. Many females joined Bikingi, leading to its growth.
Wild Planet Safaris highlights that this family underwent habituation and may not always be available for standard trekking, but it plays a key role in conservation and research.
Named after its leader, the Rwigi Gorilla Family emerged from the Kahungye group following internal conflicts.
Wild Planet Safaris identifies this family as one of the newer habituated groups, offering fresh opportunities for visitors to observe evolving gorilla social structures.
The Mucunguzi Gorilla Family has one of the most fascinating origin stories. Mucunguzi, once a subordinate silverback in the Bweza group, was expelled and forced to survive alone.
Wild Planet Safaris recounts how he later formed his own family by attracting females from other groups. Today, the family consists of about 10 members, mostly females.
The Tindatine Gorilla Family is the newest addition to Rushaga, officially opened for trekking in 2024.
Wild Planet Safaris highlights that this group split from the Nshongi family and offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore a newly habituated gorilla group.
The Kutu Gorilla Family, led by silverback Ndugu, is another exciting addition to Rushaga Sector.
Wild Planet Safaris describes this family as vibrant and growing, with around 20 members, including infants, juveniles, and adult females. It offers a dynamic trekking experience for visitors.
Wild Planet Safaris positions Rushaga as the ultimate destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Here’s why:
