In 2012, these protected natural zones include the Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest. With a vast array of incredible things to see and do, it is unsurprising that Rwanda Safari welcomes so many visitors from around the world each year.
Each Rwanda Safari Park protects a distinct ecosystem and hosts a variety of species. Volcanoes National Park, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and sits within the Virunga volcanic mountain chain, ranks as Africa’s oldest park and the most heavily patrolled in the world. Together with neighboring parks across the borders, it forms the world’s only habitat for mountain gorillas, whose population has increased over the past decade. Authorities strictly limit visitor access to the gorillas, and tourists must purchase passes—often well in advance—through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Golden monkeys occupy a separate area within the park.
To the southeast, along the Burundian border, Nyungwe National Park shelters a large number of chimpanzees and hosts a variety of other primate species in its highland rainforest.
On Rwanda’s eastern border, near Lake Victoria and Tanzania, Akagera National Park protects diverse African wildlife within its savannah ecosystem, including giraffes, elephants, buffalo, baboons, gazelles, and zebras. Lions originally roamed the park but local people exterminated them by poisoning during and after the genocide. Park authorities are currently fencing the area to reintroduce lions imported from South Africa.
