What to Expect on the Actual Day of Gorilla Trekking. After confirming your safari with Abunda Discoveries Uganda, the real adventure begins. You will pack your rucksack, prepare your trekking gear, and travel to either Uganda or Rwanda for one of Africa’s most life-changing wildlife experiences—gorilla trekking. Many travelers often wonder what actually happens on the trekking day itself. Below is a detailed guide to help you know exactly what to expect.
What to Expect on the Actual Day of Gorilla Trekking. Once you book your gorilla trekking safari, it is important to secure all required travel documents, gorilla permits, immunizations, and payments in advance. At Abunda Discoveries Uganda, we strongly recommend booking early so that permits and accommodations are well arranged, especially during peak seasons.
Upon arrival in Uganda or Rwanda, our professional driver-guide will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your pre-booked lodge for check-in and relaxation. While it is possible to arrive late at night and trek the following morning, we highly recommend arriving at least one day before trekking to allow your body to rest and acclimatize.
Your trekking day begins early with breakfast at your lodge. Afterward, your Abunda Discoveries Uganda driver-guide will transfer you to the park headquarters (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or Volcanoes National Park).
At the headquarters, park officials will:
This briefing covers gorilla behavior, conservation importance, trekking rules, safety precautions, and how to behave in the presence of gorillas.
You will then be assigned to a trekking group of up to eight people, each led by an experienced ranger guide. Allocation depends on factors such as age, fitness level, and special interests. Guests who prefer shorter hikes or have physical limitations are often assigned to gorilla families closer to the trailheads. If you have a specific gorilla family you’d like to see, you can inform your guide during allocation.
After allocation, your ranger guide will lead you into the forest to begin tracking the gorillas. You will hike through dense tropical rainforest, thick vegetation, muddy trails, and steep terrain. Rangers clear small branches along the way to make the trail manageable.
Gorillas are wild animals that move freely in search of food. While they are habituated, their location changes daily. Trekking time can range from 30 minutes to 4 hours or more, depending on where the gorillas last nested.
For your safety, each group is escorted by:
These scouts are trained to ensure visitor safety, though serious incidents are extremely rare.
Before you even arrive at the park, professional trackers head into the forest early in the morning to locate your assigned gorilla family. They constantly communicate with the ranger guides, providing updates on the gorillas’ movements and location, which helps guide your trek efficiently.
Be ready for a physically demanding but rewarding hike. There are no fixed trails, so expect slippery and uneven terrain. We recommend:
Always follow your guide’s instructions and inform them when you need a break.
Finally, after hours of trekking, you will encounter your gorilla family. This is the most thrilling moment of the safari. Your guide will remind you of the rules, including maintaining a minimum distance of 7 meters and limiting your visit to one hour.
You may observe gorillas:
Avoid direct eye contact with dominant silverbacks, remain calm, and follow your guide’s instructions at all times. Set your camera beforehand, turn off flash and sound, and capture unforgettable moments responsibly.
Despite their massive size, gorillas are gentle, intelligent, and incredibly fascinating. Watching a silverback assert dominance or young gorillas play is an awe-inspiring experience.
Once your one-hour encounter ends, you will trek back to the park headquarters where you will receive a gorilla trekking certificate. Your Abunda Discoveries Uganda driver-guide will then transfer you back to your lodge or onward to your next destination.
